Also, early April can be a little iffy weather-wise, particularly in the higher elevations. Hiking should be fine but there might not be much porch sitting. I can see arguments for both. City being more convenient and central. Outside areas being more private and quiet I found it to be cheaper to stay outside of town as I got mountain views and privacy for the price of a hotel room downtown.
Its a matter of opinion really. If you want to walk to places you should stay in town. Driving down the Blue Ridge Parkway from Virginia so we will have hiked and toured the area.
Stopping at Asheville for 3 days and continuing on through the Smoky Mountains and staying in the mountains for a few days. Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.
